Cape Disappointment

We finally made it to the Cape Disappointment lighthouse, after several disappointing attempts. The hike to the lighthouse was fun but the visitor center was far more interesting than we expected.

The old grist mill - Woodland WA

We had been planning a visit to the old grist mill since we moved to the Vancouver area and finally made it this fall. Apparently the mill is open on the weekends but we arrived on a Monday. We hiked upstream a bit and saw the fish and game experts checking the fish tags on the salmon headed upstream.

I am thrilled to announce my first official published book. Most of you probably thought this would be on some scientific topic but I am proud to say it is actually illustrated. :)

My co-authors are a wonderful group of women engineers. I admit that I contributed little to the story narrative so they get all the credit for Tembo's great adventure.

You can read the whole book online, and don't feel required to buy one since we don't receive any profits. :)

The Feigenbaum constant

I had previously blogged about my new series on faith and math, but today seemed like a good day to post another picture in this series.

This piece is about the Feigenbaum constant, another transcendental number. Every chaotic system that corresponds to this description will bifurcate at the same rate. Feigenbaum's constant can be used to predict when chaos will arise in such systems before it ever occurs.

Ferrofluid droplets

This image shows the sequence of a ferrofluid (magnetic fluid) impacting a superhydrophobic surface. The video that explains the phenomena was a recent submission to a fluid conference by Danny Bolledula, Prasad Bhosale, myself, and other collaborators. The video gives an overview of ferrofluids and the jetting phenomena we observed.

A wonderful engagement session with an adorable couple. We ended up shooting after dark in Seattle, which led to the great silhouette in front of the stained glass of Suzzallo.

Exploring Faith and Math

I am starting a new series exploring faith and mathematics. Many scientist write about the ties they see between religion and mathematics including Carl Sagan, John C. Polkinghorne (my favorite) and many more.

My series is based on transcendental numbers and scientific constants. Hopefully they are a thought-provoking look at your own faith, whether you believe in God, science, or both.

This image is called "the transcendental nature of prayer". None of the 5 trillion digits of pi calculated to date repeat. Can we quantify prayer?

This is another from the math images collection. If you are not familiar the supremum norm is often referred to as the "sup norm", like a cute little math nickname. There is really nothing cute about a norm but there is supreme irony.

Inside the UW Wind Tunnel

The fluids lab at UW has a wind tunnel that is used to study droplets (think clouds). I recently took some photos of the system and the graduate students who run it. They have lasers! More information about the lab is on the UW website.

I spent a few hours on the Olympic Penninsula. Mostly a quick trip up Hurricane Ridge and around Port Townsend.

Tidal Energy

This is a longer blog post than normal because these photos require a bit more explanation. I was invited out on the RV Robertson to photograph the placement of a tidal energy data system. The system is called a spider and it is loaded with equipment to measure velocity and record other data that will help the researchers place the tidal turbines in the correct location.

Once the spider is ready to deploy the team of researchers carefully positions the system and lowers it to the bottom of Admiralty Inlet where it will collect data over time.

The University of Washington research team will analyse this data and many other sources to help determine the best way to implement tidal energy in Puget Sound.
