Tidal Energy

This is a longer blog post than normal because these photos require a bit more explanation. I was invited out on the RV Robertson to photograph the placement of a tidal energy data system. The system is called a spider and it is loaded with equipment to measure velocity and record other data that will help the researchers place the tidal turbines in the correct location.

Once the spider is ready to deploy the team of researchers carefully positions the system and lowers it to the bottom of Admiralty Inlet where it will collect data over time.

The University of Washington research team will analyse this data and many other sources to help determine the best way to implement tidal energy in Puget Sound.

If you would like more information about this UW effort, please see the UW Marine Energy website. If you would like to look at the photos from the cruise they are in this gallery.
