Memory, speak. Mikala

This is the first portrait in my new series, "Memory, speak". The goal is to allow the memories of a person to tell you the story of who they are. I find the layers of a human that are not visible in the face are fascinating.

This may have been the best birthday party ever. Seriously.

soup norm

This is another from the math images collection. If you are not familiar the supremum norm is often referred to as the "sup norm", like a cute little math nickname. There is really nothing cute about a norm but there is supreme irony.

We had tons of fun making the triangle inequality in alphabet soup, close up is below.

Golden Spiral

The golden spiral may be approximated mathematically by the Fibonacci spiral and also by the rectangles shown below, but the math is actually the golden spiral in polar coordinates. Larger version is available for purchase with the other math art.

A wonderful set of wet senior photos! That is the nature of Seattle but we had a great time anyway.

Inside the UW Wind Tunnel

The fluids lab at UW has a wind tunnel that is used to study droplets (think clouds). I recently took some photos of the system and the graduate students who run it. They have lasers! More information about the lab is on the UW website.

UW Botany Greenhouse

I took a trip to the University of Washington Botany Greenhouse in search of Fibonacci. The final spirals are in the entry gallery here. More cactus and plants here.

Olympic Penninsula

I spent a few hours on the Olympic Penninsula. Mostly a quick trip up Hurricane Ridge and around Port Townsend.

Tidal Energy

This is a longer blog post than normal because these photos require a bit more explanation. I was invited out on the RV Robertson to photograph the placement of a tidal energy data system. The system is called a spider and it is loaded with equipment to measure velocity and record other data that will help the researchers place the tidal turbines in the correct location.





Once the spider is ready to deploy the team of researchers carefully positions the system and lowers it to the bottom of Admiralty Inlet where it will collect data over time.


The University of Washington research team will analyse this data and many other sources to help determine the best way to implement tidal energy in Puget Sound.
